I love the hope that comes with the new year. Social media is flooded with posts about new beginnings—goals, fresh starts, and the ever-popular “New year, new me.” The enthusiasm is infectious, and I can’t get enough of it.
This wave of hope and initiative always motivates me to start the year on a positive note. It’s a time for self-reflection, where I look back on the past year and savor the moments that brought me joy. I think about the lessons learned from less favorable situations (yes, I’m still occasionally haunted by that offhand comment from 1996). I remember the people who made my year special, the good times shared, the memories created, and the adventures embarked upon.
I use this period to set intentions, or resolutions, for the coming year. One of my goals is to embrace an adventure every month. Recent quotes I’ve seen online about monthly adventures have really sparked my wanderlust. These adventures don’t need to be grand escapades; they could be as simple as a day trip to the beach or a visit to a local state park—just a chance to explore somewhere new.
Another key part of my new year’s ritual is expressing gratitude. I think about the people in my life and how I can strengthen those relationships. I reflect on my job, my home, and how I can improve these aspects of my life. In 2024, I’m committed to being more present with my loved ones and making more time for family and friends.
A principle I carry from one year to the next is to live each day as if it were my last. I know it sounds clichéd, but it’s a mantra I take to heart. I aim to seize opportunities, explore new places, and make the most of every moment. I don’t want to look back and realize I spent too much time in front of the TV or stuck in the office.
Cancer has profoundly changed me. Even with the risk of recurrence, however small, it’s altered my perspective. While I still appreciate a good lazy day, I’m more driven than ever to seize every opportunity and live life to its fullest.
To celebrate the new year, we (me, Hubs, Boy1, and Boy2) enjoyed a fun evening at our local Stars and Strikes. We bowled, played arcade games, and had a blast with a game of laser tag. Afterward, we cozied up on the couch in our pajamas to watch the ball drop.
How did you ring in the new year?
