Hormones and thyroids and sugars, oh my!

Since my hysterectomy, I’ve been grappling with weight issues. To be honest, weight management had been a struggle long before that, but it was after the surgery that I felt like I truly hit a wall. Despite my best efforts to stabilize or lose weight, the numbers on the scale have been steadily climbing.

Over the past four years, I’ve faced numerous cycles of trying and failing, trying and failing. My breast cancer was hormone-sensitive, which meant I was put on hormone blockers and had a hysterectomy as an additional preventative measure. Given that I had previously undergone a partial hysterectomy due to hydrosalpinx, my hormonal system was already compromised. With menopause added into the mix, I was concerned that my hormones were completely out of balance.

As a parent of a special needs child, I want to ensure that I’m in the best possible health to take care of my child for as long as they need me. Frustrated by my lack of success and the mental strain it brought, I decided to consult my primary care doctor. Before the appointment, I requested lab tests through the portal to investigate my hormones, thyroid function, and glucose levels—concerns stemming from my family history of diabetes and the possibility of other factors contributing to my weight gain.

The results were revealing: my hormones were actually consistent with perimenopause, not menopause, despite having not had a period since 2017. My thyroid was underactive, so I’ve started medication (levothyroxine) to help regulate it. My A1C levels were elevated but not yet in the diabetic range—though if I don’t cut back on sugars and carbs, it could head in that direction. I’ve begun reducing my carb intake and taking my thyroid medication, and I’m already noticing some positive changes on the scale. I’m also feeling less exhausted, suggesting that my thyroid issues might have been affecting more than just my weight.

Next on my agenda is finding the right fitness plan. I’ve tried many different ones in the past, some of which I enjoyed and found effective. Now, I need to decide whether to revisit something familiar or explore a new approach. It’s all about making the right choices for my health.

Here’s to a healthier day ahead!
