The second phase of our back-to-school preparations involved shopping for school supplies, and this year’s experience was surprisingly smooth and stress-free!
Reflecting on past years, our first school supply shopping trip in November was quite the adventure. The boys had just been placed with us, and finding basic supplies like a pencil case and left-handed scissors in a store without a dedicated school supplies section was a bit of a challenge. Last year was no better; after the school’s supply box vendor failed to fulfill orders, I found myself scrambling to gather everything a week before school started. This year, however, we planned ahead, and it made all the difference.
We tackled most of our shopping at Target, and I was pleasantly surprised by how affordable it was. For both boys, who are in the same grade with identical supply lists, I spent just $100 on essentials like folders, notebooks, pencils, and crayons. It felt like a great deal, especially compared to last year when I ordered similar items from Amazon and spent more.
Additionally, on Prime Day, I picked up some extra items like headphones, bento boxes, and sport water bottles for their fall sports activities. It’s been a relief to check off these preparations early and feel organized for the school year ahead!

Boy1 may end up needing more supplies for his special education classroom. We’ll probably find that out after meet the teacher night.
