Dining with Kids: Vickery’s Bar & Grill (Mt. Pleasant, SC)

On the day we visited Fort Sumter, we made a delightful stop for lunch at Vickery’s Bar & Grill, nestled on Shem Creek in Mt. Pleasant. Since we don’t venture to Mt. Pleasant often, we relish the chance to try out local spots we’ve heard great things about but haven’t had the opportunity to visit.

For me, dining out in Mt. Pleasant is always a chance to indulge in seafood, especially when it’s served right by the water. I adore seafood, and there’s something particularly special about enjoying it with a scenic view of the creek. Vickery’s offered just that—delicious food paired with a picturesque setting. It was the perfect spot to savor a meal and soak in the charm of the area.

One of my favorite moments from our dining experience at Vickery’s Bar & Grill was watching the boys’ determined attempt to retrieve a coin embedded in the wooden stairs. They’re always on the lookout for loose change, and spotting this coin, they eagerly tried to pry it out—despite it being firmly set in the flooring. Their persistence led to a lot of laughter, though I wish I’d captured the moment in a photo. Unfortunately, the area was quite busy, and I didn’t want to block traffic.

The menu at Vickery’s was impressive, offering a wide range of options for both seafood and meat lovers. We kicked off our meal with an appetizer of fried calamari, which was a standout. Hubs also tried the oyster stew, but the calamari stole the show. It was likely the best we’ve ever had—the batter was crispy and flavorful, and the calamari itself was perfectly tender, not at all rubbery.

For our main courses, I chose the blackened mahi with mango salsa, accompanied by Carolina red rice and vegetables. The green beans were a standout—they were incredibly flavorful, though I’m not sure what made them so special. The red rice was equally delightful; while I’m not usually a fan of dishes featuring Andouille sausage, the flavor here was subtle and perfectly balanced.

Hubs opted for the Lowcountry Sauté, which featured shrimp, crab meat, and crawfish tails in a rich bourbon butter sauce, garnished with crispy fried oysters and served over grits. I tried a bite and immediately regretted not ordering it for myself. The bourbon butter was exceptional, and everything—shrimp, crab, and crawfish—was cooked to perfection. Although it was served over grits, I think I would have enjoyed it even more with rice.

The boys each had fried shrimp and french fries. I love that they’ve developed a taste for seafood—shrimp, crab, and even fish sticks are always hits with them. The portion sizes were generous and reasonably priced at $9.00. Despite being a seafood-focused restaurant, the kids’ menu offered plenty of “plain” options like cheeseburgers, chicken fingers, and mac and cheese, catering to all tastes.

One aspect that can truly enhance a dining experience is having entertainment options for kids, and Vickery’s Bar & Grill nailed it in this regard. My boys are generally very well-behaved in restaurants, and we’re fortunate that they’re easily entertained and can stay calm under most circumstances. Still, it’s always a pleasant surprise when a restaurant’s menu doubles as an activity page, and Vickery’s did not disappoint.

The activity page was notably larger than the typical letter-size menu insert, and it was packed with a variety of engaging activities. Instead of just the usual maze and tic-tac-toe, it included riddles, drawing prompts, matching games, and more. The diversity kept the boys entertained throughout the meal, to the point where they didn’t even finish all the activities.

With quick service and ample entertainment, Vickery’s earned high marks in our book for making dining out with kids a delightful experience. Bravo to Vickery’s for thinking of the little ones and making our visit even more enjoyable!
