Dining With Kids: Azul (Summerville, SC)

Recently, our family enjoyed a dinner out at a local Mexican restaurant called Azul. With the kids in tow, we were excited for a relaxed meal filled with flavorful food and a bit of adventure for our picky eater, Boy2.

Azul’s cozy, vibrant atmosphere set the stage for a fun family night. We were greeted warmly and quickly seated at a table that was perfect for our crew. The kids were eager to dig into the menu, and we were happy to see that the restaurant offered a variety of kid-friendly options.

Boy1 opted for a classic: a burrito paired with rice. The burrito was stuffed with shredded chicken and just the right size for him. He was thrilled with his choice and managed to finish most of what was on his plate. The real win here was that he used a knife to cut his food completely independently!

Boy2, ever the picky eater, decided on a kids’ pizza with fries. Azul’s menu had him covered with a range of options at a very affordable price of $6.50 per kids’ meal. But the real surprise came with the appetizer. We had ordered the Azul Sampler, a platter that promised a variety of Mexican treats. To our delight, Boy2 discovered a new favorite: the chicken taquito from the sampler. It’s not often that he steps out of his comfort zone with food, so this was a small victory in itself!

The Azul Sampler was a hit with the whole family. It featured a tasty mix of items, including the aforementioned taquito, which Boy2 enjoyed immensely. The sampler also included nachos, quesadillas, and a few other goodies that got the meal off to a great start.

While the food was delicious, there was a bit of a hiccup with the timing. Our main dishes arrived almost immediately after the appetizer. As much as we enjoyed the Azul Sampler, the swift arrival of our main courses meant that we didn’t get to savor the appetizer as much as we would have liked. It felt a bit rushed, but the flavors and quality of the food were definitely on point.

Hubs decided to go for a burrito, and I chose enchiladas. Both dishes were well-prepared and flavorful. The burrito was generously portioned and packed with delicious ingredients (steak, mushrooms, etc.), while my enchiladas were a satisfying mix of spices and textures. Despite the timing issue, we thoroughly enjoyed our main courses.

Overall, our dinner at Azul was a positive experience. The kid-friendly menu and affordable pricing were much appreciated, and it was great to see Boy2 trying and liking something new. The food quality was high, and the friendly atmosphere made for an enjoyable evening out.

Azul Mexican Restaurant is a solid choice for families looking to enjoy a casual, flavorful meal. We’ll definitely keep it on our list of go-to spots for future dinners. Next time, we might just ask for a little more time to enjoy those appetizers before diving into the main course!
