I recently came across a quote on Facebook that said, “Once a year, go someplace you’ve never been before.” It wasn’t attributed to anyone, so maybe it’s just a timeless piece of wisdom or advice. Regardless, I absolutely adore this idea! I have a passion for exploring new places and can’t wait to share the wonders of the world with my boys.
Back in my 20s, I made a bucket list goal to visit every intriguing place signposted along highways. Little did I realize how many there were! Nonetheless, the idea of spontaneously stopping at these landmarks—be it museums, monuments, or battlefields—still excites me. Each one holds a unique slice of American history. Unfortunately, when I’m on the road, I’m often en route to a destination and don’t have the luxury of making detours.
Isn’t that always the way?
Anyway, the idea of “going someplace you’ve never been before” has me rethinking our vacation plans. Does this mean we shouldn’t visit Disney World repeatedly? And does staying at different resorts count as exploring? And here I was, thinking that touring the World Showcase at EPCOT was my chance to travel the globe! Oh well, it’s all part of the adventure.

We’re fortunate to live in such a stunning country—and indeed, a breathtaking world. While I know I won’t be able to experience it all in my lifetime, I’m eager to see as much as possible. I’m grateful that my husband shares my adventurous spirit, even if he leans a bit more towards enjoying our southeastern corner of the country. Meanwhile, I’m the one dreaming of exploring new places like a pinball!
This sense of adventure is something we’re excited to share with our kids. We’ve been patiently waiting for the perfect moment to start this journey, and as 2023 draws to a close (can you believe it?), I’m looking forward to the new year with plans for exploration. My goal is to visit at least one new place each year, continuing to show my boys the wonders of the world, one adventure at a time.
